Water treatment technologies have evolved significantly to enhance the safety and quality of water for various applications. Among these advancements, salt chlorinators have emerged as innovative systems that revolutionize the way swimming pools and spas are sanitized. Salt chlorination provides an efficient and environmentally friendly alternative to traditional chlorine dosing methods, offering a more sustainable approach to water treatment.
Salt Chlorinators:
A Salt Chlorinator is a water treatment system designed to produce chlorine on-site from common table salt (sodium chloride). This self-contained unit utilizes a process known as electrolysis to convert salt into chlorine, eliminating the need for the manual addition of chlorine-based chemicals.
How Salt Chlorination Works:
The operation of a salt chlorinator involves passing a low-voltage electrical current through a cell that contains plates coated with a precious metal, often titanium with a Mixed Metal Oxide (MMO) coating. As water flows through the cell, the electrolysis process causes the salt molecules to break down into sodium and hypochlorous acid (HOCl), the active form of chlorine responsible for disinfection.
